The name is documented in both 1682 and 1845 in the original cadastre.
„Lanze“ (lance) refers to the narrow, elongated shape of the meadow valley. „Hessel“ stands for hazel bush, Middle High German „hasel“.
The Lanzenhessel was originally a lance-shaped meadow valley surrounded by hazel bushes.
